2008 District Calendar

Jay Herndon

Jay HerndonWelcome to the website of the Northern California and Nevada Assemblies of God. My name is Jay Herndon and I serve as the District Secretary-Treasurer for this great District.

Since I am the newest member to the Executive Team, you may be interested to know a little bit about my background.

I was born on a cold winter day in Northern Minnesota, my father was a farmer. As a child we migrated to California and I was mostly raised in Santa Cruz, California. As a boy I attended a small Foursquare Church and when I became older I assisted my pastor: running the sound, mowing the lawn, and working around the place. It was then that I began to sense that God was calling me into ministry. After High School I enrolled in Bethany Bible College (now Bethany University of the Assemblies of God.) After graduating (1981) I became credentialed with this District and began a decade of Youth Ministry—first in Redwood City, later in Covina, and then in Las Vegas. We also did a season of missions work in the South Pacific with YWAM.

In 1988 I enrolled at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley and became Co-Pastor in San Rafael. I also began teaching as an adjunct at Bethany College! During those days I also worked as a part time Supervisor at UPS (I was pretty busy!) After graduating with a Master of Divinity (1991) I became a Senior Pastor, first in Felton, and later in Burlingame. I also continued as an adjunct at Bethany and later as a Trustee. I also enrolled in a Doctor of Ministry program at GGBTS which I finished in 2001. I also served on their Doctor of Ministry Committee.

In addition to being a Trustee at Bethany, I also served the District in various capacities: Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee, Presbyter, Executive Presbyter, and Chairman of the Blue Ribbon Committee, as well as some other ad-hoc duties. This past April the District elected me to be Secretary-Treasurer.

It was early in my ministry, in Redwood City, that I met and married Teri — Teri was a beautiful young lady who also felt called to ministry—I first recruited her to assist me in the youth ministry and later realized that I needed her for something more! She has been my companion in life and ministry ever since. Teri is my best friend, my favorite person in the world. I am sure that you will come to admire her too. Together we have raised two children: Joshua, who is a senior at Bethany University and an Intern at Bethel Church San Jose, and Janae, who is a freshman at Bethany University and likewise feels called to ministry. When I consider my life, I think that I am the most blessed man alive!

So how do I approach this new job? I have adopted a personal mission statement to remind me of my purpose: To promote and preserve the ministries and the assets of the District Council and its churches. In addition to general executive officer responsibilities (assisting and advising churches and ministers) my specific function as secretary-treasurer involves things like credentials, corporations, legal records, and finances. My goal is to help GROW our churches and ministries (promotion of assets and reputation—resourcing and supporting them so that they may grow,) and to help GUARD them (preserving assets and reputation—to help ensure that legal, financial, and other complications do not diminish or destroy them. These twin purposes I learned from the example of Nehemiah—the lesson of the Sword and the Trowel.

As the District Secretary, it is my responsibility to provide official minutes of the governing boards and to maintain the official membership list of all credentialed ministers and Assemblies of God Churches in this District.

As the District Treasurer, it is my responsibility to coordinate the annual audit, to provide accurate financial reports to the governing boards and various District departments, and to give oversight to the day-to-day financial operations of the District.

If I can be of any service to you, please contact me at the office.

Specifically, I will interface with most of you regarding credentialing and other administrative matters. Below are a few links to some of them.

Once again, welcome to our web site and have a great visit!

Dr. Jay A. Herndon
Secretary-Treasurer

We Have Good News For You!

There Must Be More To Life Than This
We were all created to be loved. The “makeup” of our hearts is such that we are not complete until we are living in relationship with one who loves us with a perfect love.

A perfect love is one which doesn’t demand anything in return, but loves you only for you. Not because you do good things. Not because you act correctly. Not because you know the right people. Not because you’re rich. Not because you were born into the right family. But just because of you. No strings attached.

No one on earth is capable of loving us with such a perfect love. Everyone on earth who loves us (our parents, our siblings, our spouse, our children, our friends), no matter how sincere they are, all want something in return for their love. They want to be loved in return. They want our companionship. They want to be treated well by us. They want access to our things or our money. The problem is that since we are not perfect, we can’t always give them what they want. And so their love, not receiving what it demands in return, is fickle. Sometimes we are loved, sometimes we are not.
Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light. Matthew 11:28-30
This leaves us incomplete, longing for something greater and more pure. This longing for a greater, purer love lies behind the feeling we often have that “something is not quite right;” that “this can’t be how life is supposed to be;” that “there must be more to life than this.”

The famous French philosopher Blaise Pascal recognized this incompleteness when he wrote, “There is a vacuum in the heart of every person that cannot be filled by any created thing.”

Because we are not living in relationship with one who loves us with this perfect love, we go through life largely without meaning, without fulfillment, without satisfaction, without a lasting joy.

If this describes your life today, we have good news for you!

A Love Beyond Your Wildest Dreams
Deep in your heart is a desire to come home to the love you were created for. To return to the passion of God’s embrace. To yield to His infinite affection. To be immersed into His love which is so deep and so strong that it cannot be comprehended. To be baptized into unbounded gentleness. Consistent and ever-faithful mercy. Tenderness which is relentless and constantly-pursuing. Lavish, extravagant, and unrestrained kindness. This is God’s love for you. A love which is passionate in the purest sense of the word. A love which has no limits, a love which is totally unselfish, a love beyond your wildest dreams.

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! 1 John 3:1

God’s greatest desire is to have a close, intimate relationship with you. He desires to be your closest friend, to lavish His love upon you. Intimate friendship is His goal. He wants you to know how deeply you are loved. He wants you to experience His love, and He wants to experience your love for Him (although He will go on loving you whether or not you ever love Him). He wants to converse and dialogue with you - the way friends do.

A well-known philosopher of the 4th century A.D., Saint Augustine, wrote of this desire: “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.”

Separated From God
Although God’s greatest desire is to have a close, intimate relationship with us, there is a barrier which stands between us and the full experience of His love: our unbelief. We are separated from Him because of our unbelief.
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd. Matthew 9:36
At the beginning of time, the first man and woman rejected relationship with God in exchange for the promise of being like God and thus being independent from God. Throughout history, mankind has largely reinforced that decision and continued in a stance of independence from God.

This core sin of rejecting relationship with God is what the Bible calls unbelief. In the biblical sense, unbelief is more than a lack of mental assent to a set of facts or doctrines. It is a lack of trust in God, an ongoing desire for independence from Him.

It doesn’t stop there, though. The core sin of unbelief leads to all sorts of self-destructive behavior: greed, dishonesty, envy, gossip, arrogance, slander, boasting, lust, theft, murder, anger, alcoholism, drug abuse, violence, etc. These (as well as other destructive attitudes and activities) the Bible calls sins.

These activities and attitudes, contrary to what some believe, were not arbitrarily determined to be sinful by God. Instead, God knew that these behaviors and attitudes were harmful for us, that they would ultimately destroy us. And so because of His great love for us, God pleads with us to not engage in these destructive behaviors. He has memorialized His pleas in His laws and has told us that violating these laws will result in self-destruction.

Both the sin of unbelief and the individual sins which result from unbelief have consequences. The Bible says that the wages (or consequences) of sin is death. Spiritual death is the inevitable result of our sin. In biblical terms, death refers to separation from God. From the moment we are born, we are on a path toward that spiritual death and destructiveness. We are separated from God because of our unbelief.

What makes our plight so desperate is that because of the introduction of sin (unbelief) into the world by the first man and woman, all of us have been born with this desire for independence as our natural state. We cannot, on our own, suddenly become dependent upon God because independence from Him is at the core of our nature. We are powerless to solve our problem.

God Has Reconciled Himself To Us
God was not willing, however, to leave us in our desperate state. His lavish love caused Him to take action.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

In response to our plight, God became a man in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus lived on earth for thirty years before beginning an itinerant ministry among the people of Israel.

During the three-and-a-half years of His ministry, Jesus taught people about living in relationship with God, healed the sick, performed miracles, and demonstrated God’s passionate love to all with whom He came in contact.

Although it was commonly believed in His day that only holy and righteous people, born into the right segments of society, could have any sort of relationship with God, Jesus taught instead that God’s love was available to all, regardless of their lifestyle, background, or standing in society. The Jewish religious leaders of His day were threatened by Jesus and His ministry.

The conflict between Jesus and those religious leaders finally culminated in His crucifixion. The Jewish leaders conspired with one of Jesus’ disciples, Judas, to deliver Him into the hands of the Roman ruler of the Jewish province, Pontius Pilate. Pilate, although he tried to claim no responsibility for Jesus’ death, presided over His crucifixion.

While there were several parties involved in Jesus’ death - Judas, the Jewish religious leaders, Pontius Pilate, the Roman army - ultimately, it was our sin and the sin of all mankind which led to Jesus’ death. It was God’s plan from the beginning of time for Jesus to die for our sins.

Christ died on a cross to take our place. He died instead of us. The wages of our sin is death, but Jesus took the inevitable penalty and consequence of our sin upon Himself.

Not only did Jesus take the penalty for our sin. When He rose from the dead three days later, He also completed the disarming of sin and its power over us. Remember how we said that from our birth, independence from God is at the core of our nature and that we are powerless to solve our problem? On the cross and through His resurrection, Jesus broke the power of that independent spirit.

This leaves us in a place where we are free to choose to renounce our unbelief and place our trust in God. We are free to cast our lives upon the death of Jesus, believing His sacrifice to be our only hope for entering into a close, intimate friendship with God.

God is not angry with us. The Bible says that He has reconciled Himself to us. That means that from His standpoint, the barrier that separated us from Him - our sin and unbelief - has been eliminated. From His standpoint, there is no longer anything between us that would keep us from having the close, intimate friendship He has always wanted with us. He has taken the first step toward restoring our relationship with Him.

And yet, it remains to be seen whether or not we will reciprocate, and take the next step and reconcile ourselves to Him. While God has made clear His desire for relationship with us, it is up to us to accept His invitation.

We Can Be Reconciled To God
To reconcile ourselves to God and enter into a close, intimate friendship with Him is a simple and yet profound decision. There are four steps to take in order to reconcile yourself to God:
If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Confess. The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)” To confess means to agree with God that you are a sinner, that you have tried to live your life independently of God and that the results of that decision have been self-destructive behavior and attitudes. God can’t solve your problem if you don’t agree with Him that there is a problem and if you don’t agree with Him regarding the nature of the problem.

Repent. At the beginning of His earthly ministry, Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel. (Mark 1:15)” It is important that you renounce your unbelief and turn from it. You must choose to no longer live independently of God.

Believe. The Bible says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved,.... (Acts 16:31)” Just as unbelief in the biblical sense is more than a lack of mental assent to a set of facts or doctrines, so biblical belief is more than mental assent to a set of facts or principles. In a biblical sense, belief represents trust. To believe in Jesus, therefore, is to cast your life upon Him, trusting in His death on the cross as your only hope of an eternal relationship with God.

Receive. The Bible says, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,....(John 1:12)” The final step to being reconciled to God is to ask Jesus, who is alive forever, to take up residence in your heart and begin to live His life through you.

A Prayer
If you would like to be reconciled to God and begin a close, intimate friendship with Him, a simple prayer is all that is necessary. If you have never talked to God, don’t worry - it’s just like talking to a friend. If you have trouble finding the right words, perhaps you would like to use these words:

“Dear God, I agree with You that up until now, I have lived my life independently of You. I have tried to go my own way and have not paid attention to Your principles and Your ways. Today, I would like to renounce that independent spirit and my unbelief. From this day forward, I choose to live in dependence upon You. I believe in You, Lord Jesus. I believe that You died on the cross to take the penalty for my sin. I believe that You were raised from the dead on the third day. I cast my life completely upon Your sacrifice and believe that it is my only hope for an eternal relationship with God. I receive You as my Lord and Savior and invite You to take up residence in my heart. I ask that You would begin to live Your life through me. Thank You for dying for my sin. Thank You, God, for forgiving me of all my sin. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. Amen.”

The Promise Of God
If you sincerely prayed that prayer or a similar prayer, you are now a true Christian, and you now possess the gift of eternal life. You have entered into that close, intimate friendship with God.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17

The Bible says this: “And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.”

Since you have believed on the name of the Son of God (Jesus), you can be assured that you now have eternal life. This is God’s promise to you.

If you have committed your life to Jesus Christ, we would strongly suggest that you contact your local Assemblies of God church or send email to the . We would like to keep in touch with you and provide you with some materials which will help you in your newfound relationship with God.

Core Beliefs

The Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. This account of our core beliefs is intended simply as a basis of fellowship among us (i.e., that we all speak the same thing - 1 Corinthians 1:10; Acts 2:42). The language used in this account is not inspired nor contended for, but the truth set forth is held to be essential to a full-gospel ministry. No claim is made that it covers all Biblical truth, only that it covers our need as to these fundamental doctrines.

  • The Scriptures Inspired. The Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are verbally inspired of God and are the revelation of God to man, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21).
  • The One True God. The one true God has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent “I AM,” the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind. He has further revealed Himself as embodying the principles of relationship and association as Father, Son and Holy Ghost (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10,11; Matthew 28:19; Luke 3:22).
  • The Adorable Godhead.
    • Terms Defined. The terms “Trinity” and “persons” as related to the Godhead, while not found in the Scriptures, are words in harmony with Scripture, whereby we may convey to others our immediate understanding of the doctrine of Christ respecting the Being of God, as distinguished from “gods many and lords many.” We therefore may speak with propriety of the Lord our God who is One Lord, as a trinity or as one Being of three persons, and still be absolutely scriptural (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; John 14:16-17).
    • Distinction and Relationship in the Godhead. Christ taught a distinction of Persons in the Godhead which He expressed in specific terms of relationship, as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, but that this distinction and relationship, as to its mode is inscrutable and incomprehensible, because unexplained (Luke 1:35; 1 Corinthians 1:24; Matthew 11:25-27; 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 John 1:3-4).
    • Unity of the One Being of Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Accordingly, therefore, there is that in the Father which constitutes him the Father and not the Son; there is that in the Son which constitutes Him the Son and not the Father; and there is that in the Holy Ghost which constitutes Him the Holy Ghost and not either the Father or the Son. Wherefore the Father is the Begetter, the Son is the Begotten, and the Holy Ghost is the one proceeding from the Father and the Son. Therefore, because these three persons in the Godhead are in a state of unity, there is but one Lord God Almighty and His name one (John 1:18; 15:26; 17:11,21; Zechariah 14:9).
    • Identity and Cooperation in the Godhead. The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are never identical as to Person; nor confused as to relation; nor divided in respect to the Godhead; nor opposed as to cooperation. The Son is in the Father and the Father is in the Son as to relationship. The Son is with the Father and the Father is with the Son, as to fellowship. The Father is not from the Son, but the Son is from the Father, as to authority. The Holy Ghost is from the Father and the Son proceeding, as to nature, relationship, cooperation and authority. Hence, neither Person in the Godhead either exists or works separately or independently of the others (John 5:17-30,32,37; 8:17,18).
    • The Title, Lord Jesus Christ. The appellation, “Lord Jesus Christ,” is a proper name. It is never applied in the New Testament, either to the Father or to the Holy Ghost. It therefore belongs exclusively to the Son of God (Romans 1:1-3; 2 John 1:3).
    • The Lord Jesus Christ, God with Us. The Lord Jesus Christ, as to His divine and eternal nature, is the proper and only Begotten of the Father, but as to His human nature, He is the proper Son of Man. He is therefore, acknowledged to be both God and man; who because He is God and man is “Immanuel,” God with us (Matthew 1:23; 1 John 4:2,10,14; Revelation 1:13,17).
    • The Title, Son of God. Since the name “Immanuel” embraces both God and man in the one Person, our Lord Jesus Christ, it follows that the title, Son of God, describes His proper deity, and the title, Son of Man, His proper humanity. Therefore, the title Son of God, belongs to the order of eternity, and the title, Son of Man, to the order of time (Matthew 1:21-23; 2 John 1:3; 1 John 3:8; Hebrews 1:1-13; 7:3).
    • Transgression of the Doctrine of Christ. Wherefore, it is a transgression of the Doctrine of Christ to say that Jesus Christ derived the title, Son of God, solely from the fact of the incarnation, or because of His relation to the economy of redemption. Therefore, to deny that the Father is a real and eternal Father, and that the Son is a real and eternal Son, is a denial of the distinction and relationship in the Being of God; a denial of the Father, and the Son; and a displacement of the truth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh (2 John 1:9; John 1:1,2,14,18,29,49; 1 John 2:22,23; 4:1-5; Hebrews 12:2).
    • Exaltation of Jesus Christ as Lord. The Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, having by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; angels and principalities and powers having been made subject unto Him. And having been made both Lord and Christ, He sent the Holy Ghost that we, in the name of Jesus, might bow our knees and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father until the end, when the Son shall become subject to the Father that God may be all in all (Hebrews 1:3; 1 Peter 3:22; Acts 2:32-36; Romans 14:11; 1 Corinthians 15:24-28).
    • Equal Honor to the Father and to the Son. Wherefore, since the Father has delivered all judgment unto the Son, it is not only the express duty of all in heaven and on earth to bow the knee, but it is an unspeakable joy in the Holy Ghost to ascribe unto the Son all the attributes of Deity, and to give Him all honor and the glory contained in all the names and titles of the Godhead except those which express relationship (see Distinction and Relationship in the Godhead, Unity of the One Being of Father, Son and Holy Ghost , and Identity and Cooperation in the Godhead) and thus honor the Son even as we honor the Father (John 5:22,23; 1 Peter 1:8; Revelation 5:6-14; Philippians 2:8,9; 4:8-11; 7:9-10).
  • The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. The Scriptures declare: His virgin birth (Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:31,35), His sinless life (Hebrews 7:26; 1 Peter 2:22), His miracles (Acts 2:22; 10:38), His substitutionary work on the cross (1 Corinthians 15:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21), His bodily resurrection from the dead (Matthew 28:6; Luke 24:39; 1 Corinthians 15:4), His exaltation to the right hand of God (Acts 1:9,11; 2:33; Philippians 2:9-11; Hebrews 1:3).
  • The Fall of Man. Man was created good and upright; for God said, “Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness.” However, man by voluntary transgression fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God (Genesis 1:26,27; 2:17; 3:6; Romans 5:12-19).
  • The Salvation of Man. Man’s only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God.
    • Conditions to Salvation. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost, being justified by grace through faith, man becomes an heir of God, according to the hope of eternal life (Luke 24:47; John 3:3; Romans 10:13-15; Ephesians 2:8; Titus 2:11; 3:5-7).
    • The Evidence of Salvation. The inward evidence of salvation is the direct witness of the Spirit (Romans 8:16). The outward evidence to all men is a life of righteousness and true holiness (Ephesians 4:24; Titus 2:12).
  • The Ordinances of the Church.
    • Baptism in Water. The ordinance of baptism by immersion is commanded by the Scriptures. All who repent and believe on Christ as Saviour and Lord are to be baptized. Thus they declare to the world that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 10:47,48; Romans 6:4).
    • Holy Communion. The Lord’s Supper, consisting of the elements --bread and the fruit of the vine—is the symbol expressing our sharing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:4), a memorial of his suffering and death (1 Corinthians 11:26), and a prophecy of His second coming (1 Corinthians 11:26), and is enjoined on all believers “till He come!”
  • The Baptism in the Holy Ghost. All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Ghost and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4,8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31). This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth (Acts 8:12-17; 10:44-46; 11:14-16; 15:7-9). With the baptism in the Holy Ghost come such experiences as: an overflowing fullness of the Spirit (John 7:37-39; Acts 4:8), a deepened reverence for God (Acts 2:43; Hebrews 12:28), an intensified consecration to God and dedication to His work (Acts 2:42) and a more active love for Christ, for His Word and for the lost (Mark 16:20).
  • The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Ghost. The baptism of believers in the Holy Ghost is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4). The speaking in tongues in this instance is the same in essence as the gift of tongues, but is different in purpose and use (1 Corinthians 12:4-10,28).
  • Sanctification. Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God (Romans 12:1,2; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 13:12). The Scriptures teach a life of “holiness without which no man shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). By the power of the Holy Ghost we are able to obey the command: “Be ye holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:15,16). Sanctification is realized in the believer by recognizing his identification with Christ in His death and resurrection, and by the faith reckoning daily upon the fact of that union, and by offering every faculty continually to the dominion of the Holy Spirit (Romans 6:1-11,13; 8:1,2,13; Galatians 2:20; Philippians 2:12,13; 1 Peter 1:5).
  • The Church and its Mission. The Church is the Body of Christ, the habitation of God through the Spirit, with divine appointments for the fulfillment of her great commission. Each believer, born of the Spirit, is an integral part of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn, which are written in heaven (Ephesians 1:22,23; 2:22; Hebrews 12:23). Since God’s purpose concerning man is to seek and to save that which is lost, to be worshipped by man, and to build a body of believers in the image of His Son, the priority reason for being of the Assemblies of God as part of the Church is:
    • To be an agency of God for evangelizing the world (Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:19,20; Mark 16:15,16).
    • To be a corporate body in which man may worship God (1 Corinthians 12:13).
    • To be a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son (Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Corinthians 12:28; 14:12).
The Assemblies of God exists expressly to give continuing emphasis to this reason for being in the New Testament apostolic pattern by teaching and encouraging believers to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. This experience:
    • Enables them to evangelize in the power of the Spirit with accompanying supernatural signs (Mark 16:15-20; Acts 4:29-31; Hebrews 2:3,4).
    • Adds a necessary dimension to worshipful relationship with God (1 Corinthians 2:10-16; 1 Corinthians 12-14).
    • Enables them to respond to the full working of the Holy Spirit in expression of fruit and gifts and ministries as in New Testament times for the edifying of the body of Christ (Galatians 5:22-26; 1 Corinthians 14:12; Ephesians 4:11,12; 1 Corinthians 12:28; Colossians 1:29).
  • The Ministry. A divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for the threefold purpose of leading the Church in:
    • Evangelization of the world (Mark 16:15-20).
    • Worship of God (John 4:23,24).
    • Building a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son (Ephesians 4:11-16).
  • Divine Healing. Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of all believers (Isaiah 53:4,5; Matthew 8:16,17; James 5:14-16).
  • The Blessed Hope. The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord is the imminent and blessed hope of the church (1 Thessalonians 4:16,17; Romans 8:23; Titus 2:13; 1 Corinthians 15:51,52).
  • The Millennial Reign of Christ. The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, which is our blessed hope, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years (Zechariah 14:5; Matthew 24:27; Matthew 24:30; Revelation 1:7; 19:11-14; 20:1-6). This millennial reign will bring the salvation of national Israel (Ezekiel 37:21,22; Zephaniah 3:19,20; Romans 11:26,27) and the establishment of universal peace (Isaiah 11:6-9; Psalms 72:3-8; Micah 4:3,4).
  • The Final Judgment. There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Whosoever is not found written in the Book of Life, together with the devil and his angels, the beast and the false prophet, will be consigned to the everlasting punishment in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death (Matthew 25:46; Mark 9:43-48; Revelation 19:20; 20:11-15; 21:8).
  • The New Heavens and the New Earth. “We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21-22).

What We Believe

This section of our site will provide you with an understanding of our basic beliefs.

Core Beliefs
While we recognize that not every Christian believes exactly as we do, and while we respect the beliefs of other Christians, there are certain basic tenets which are the source of our common bond.

Position Papers
From time to time, our national headquarters, also known as The General Council of the Assemblies of God, commissions studies on various controversial issues. At the conclusion of these studies, reports are given to the General Presbytery for approval as official statements of The General Council of the Assemblies of God, or position papers, as they are often called.

Good News
We believe that we are living the way life was meant to be lived, and this section will tell you more about how you can find the same joy and satisfaction we have found! We invite you to examine the claims of Jesus and if you find them credible, to cast your life upon Him and place your trust in Him for your eternity. You won’t be sorry!

Samuel Huddleston

Samuel HuddlestonHusband ~ Father ~ Former Prisoner ~ Teacher ~ Inspirational Leader ~ Man of God

Dr. Samuel Huddleston, Assistant Superintendent of the Northern California and Nevada District Assemblies of God, has also served as pastor of Lighthouse Covenant Fellowship in Benicia, California since 1993. The church began in the Huddlestons’ home with six families. Today it is a diverse and thriving congregation, a mosaic of many cultures.

Graduating in 1980 from Bethany College in Santa Cruz, CA, Samuel and his wife Linda moved to San Rafael, California, where he attended Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.  Sensing a call to youth ministry, Samuel accepted a position at Church on the Hill in Vallejo, California, where he served from 1981 to 1988 under Pastor Terry Inman.  While there, Pastor Inman encouraged Samuel to further his education, and he subsequently enrolled at Azusa Pacific University, eventually earning his Masters Degree in Marriage Family and Child Counseling.

That educational experience also helped Samuel to finally understand his troubled childhood and what had driven him, years earlier as a reckless teenager, to be involved in a crime that had cost him five years of his life in prison. While incarcerated, Samuel surrendered his life to Christ and learned about God’s unconditional love.

His autobiography, Five Years to Life (Chosen Books, 1991), has inspired people across America and throughout the world, giving them hope for a new beginning.  Samuel has shared his testimony with thousands — including prison inmates — reminding them not only with words but also with his very presence, that God has the power to put broken lives and broken relationships back together again.

Before entering the pastorate in Benicia, Samuel was appointed Executive Director of Match Two Prisoner Outreach, the largest and most successful prison visitation program in the nation, which matches adult inmates and wards (youth) with outside volunteer visitors.  Serving from 1989 to 1991, Samuel Huddleston remains the only former prisoner to ever lead a California Department of Corrections program.

For two years after M-2, Samuel returned to his alma mater to serve as Dean of Students at Bethany College under Dr. Everett Wilson.

In May 2006 Samuel received his Doctorate of Ministry degree from Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA.

Samuel and Linda reside in Rancho Cordova, CA near their three married children: Royce, Andre, and Ericka.  They have eight grandchildren with one on the way in June of this year.

James Braddy

James BraddyDear Friends:

Welcome to the website of the Assemblies of God, Northern California Nevada District. I am delighted you are taking time to become informed about our fellowship.

There are nearly 450 churches comprising over 129,000 adherents in our district. We stretch from Smith River to King City; from San Francisco to Wells, NV; from Yreka, California to Boulder City, Nevada. These churches are vibrant congregations that are multicultural and include 20 different language groups.

We are a fellowship that values the proclamation of God’s Word. Visit any of the 450 churches and you will be treated to a biblically based message with practical applications to your daily living. You will also find lively inspiring worship that combines elements of deep traditions with contemporary expressions.

The Assemblies of God has a 3 fold purpose:

  • We minister to the Lord with our worship.
  • We minister to the unchurched through evangelism.
  • We minister to one another through our fellowship.

We have a wonderful relationship with our Heavenly Father. We desire that all mankind comes into the “forever family” of God through Jesus Christ. As believers we seek out growing bonds of friendship and commitment with one another.

If you’re looking for a church that embodies the above principles and purposes, there is an Assemblies of God fellowship near you waiting to welcome you. Come, join our family!

Sincerely,

James R. Braddy
