General Sessions with Karen Yancey
This Year’s Guest Presenter, Karen Yancey, has the perspective of a seasoned minister’s wife and a credentialed Assemblies of God minister. In full-time ministry for 26 years, Karen now serves the Kansas district as the director of Network Development, a ministry to ministers’ wives, credentialed women and their families. While maintaining a mentoring program among minister’s wives, Karen recently became a certified first-level Life Coach and uses those skills in a newly formed ministry called LifeTECC. With humor, appealing genuineness, personal stories and wisdom rooted in scripture Karen shares her heart with other women in ministry. Her husband, Terry, is the district superintendent of Kansas.
Break Out Sessions
Robin Williams Aladeen is a familiar face among our District’s pastors and their spouses. Ordained in 1977, she served 25 years as a pastor and has the distinction of being our first female District Youth Director. After receiving a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology, she has ministered for the past 15 years as a licensed, full-time therapist with a particular passion for bringing healing and recovery to those in full-time ministry. Robin and husband, Lary, make their home in San Francisco.
Robin’s Break-Out: Re-igniting or Brightening Your Marriage Relationships
“Till death do us part” is what most of us said when we chose to walk beside our partner on our wedding day. This workshop will offer healthy, passionate, innovative ways to either re-ignite or keep the fire burning brightly in your relationship as you invest in alifetime together. Robin’s expertise as a professional therapist, along with her own later-in-life marriage, gives her a unique perspective & tools to inspire you to enjoy and invest in your marriage in fun, healing & hopeful ways.
Susan Vickery Schmidt, born into a minister’s home, developed an early love for the Word and ministry. Her own ministry now spans 30 years including a variety of titles and positions. After her ordination in 1987, she turned her attention to diligent preparation for entering the field of Christian counseling. She holds a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology, and was licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1997. Combining clinical truth and scriptural principle, her specialty is counseling the troubled believer. Sue continues her private practice in Rocklin, California but is never to busy to be “Gramma” to her two granddaughters.
Sue’s Break-Out: Finding Forgiveness and Healing for Life’s Hurts
Have you ever felt stuck trying to forgive someone? Do you still feel you haven’t “really” forgiven them though you’ve tried your best to “just forgive”? This class is for you. Based on her experience in the counseling office, Sue will focus on the eight most common myths about forgiveness that keep Christian women stuck and away from the relief that God wants us to feel. This can get WAY better for YOU.
Connie Miller, for twenty-plus years, supported her husband, Gary, in both church ministry and several terms as missionaries to Latin America. Then three years ago, Gary’s death from cancer started Connie down her own unexpected path of ministry--one she would never have chosen but which has revealed some hidden gifts and resources. Today Connie is a certified grief counselor, currently leading a GriefShare Ministry at Neighborhood Church in Modesto. She is also the busy mother of five and grandmother of twelve.
Connie’s Break-Out: Growing Through Grief
If you have ever lost a loved one through the tragedy of death, or experienced any other deep loss, you will know that unless a person has been there, one just cannot know how to comfort others. Sharing lessons and skills learned both first-hand and through training, Connie will help each of us learn how we can better minister to both ourselves and others. “Take heart,” encourages Connie, “because there is a road from mourning to joy and we can take others along on the journey.”
Kathy Cannon is passionate about her calling from God to increase the level of authentic relationships and relevant teaching in the Church today. Her goal is to be an amazing disciple, wife, one-day mom, friend, follower & leader. She currently serves as a pastor with an amazing team of people at Mars Hill Community Church in Sacramento, CA and thanks the Father daily for moving this East-Coast girl from Appalachia to California. And for the invention of quad venti peppermint mocha twists.
Kathy’s Break-Out - Finding New Ways of Communicating Through Technology
Once you’ve finally figured out how to set the clock on your VCR, everything changes. If you’re wondering why people are twittering and what SMS (not to be confused with PMS) stands for, this seminar is for you. Kathy will help us learn how to communicate using new technology. From updating your status on Facebook to answering the question “Why should I start a blog?” you will discover the purpose and importance of communicating in a fresh, new way. BYOP (bring your own phone).
Joyce Baergen is the Children’s Pastor at Harvest Church in Elk Grove, CA. She has been in full-time ministry for eleven years, serving in Children’s Ministry, Christian Education, and Church Administration. Joyce enjoys ministering to children and their families, and has had opportunities to speak at District Kid’s Camps, Leadership Conferences, and Women’s Ministry events. Her desire is help strengthen families so that children can know the Lord at a young age, and walk with Him all the days of their lives.
Joyce’s Break-Out: Making the Most of Your Ministry
God has called each of us to areas of ministry that share similarities, but are also as diverse and unique as we are. For that reason, He has also given us special gifts and abilities that make us a perfect fit for the ministry he has entrusted to us. Joyce will share insights that will help you recognize how God has prepared you, equipped you, and empowered you so that you can begin to make the most of your ministry by blooming right where you are planted!

Karen’s Break-Out - Nurturing Community Vs. Going It Alone
God hard-wired us to need each other. However, without intentionality that need will go unmet keeping relationships shallow and diminishing our spiritual vitality. This can leave us emotionally unhealthy and flirting with spiritual lukewarmness. In this session Karen will share the non-negotiable tiers of relationship guaranteed to keep us from getting our wires crossed!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Following the Friday break-outs, Robin and Sue will co-host a counselor’s panel fielding pre-submitted questions re: the hard issues of ministry. As well, all registrants will receive a confirmation letter with information on how they may pre-book a personal appointment with one of our on-site counselors.
